How we add value
The Centre’s vision is focused on mechanisation which is fundamentally, the use of machinery in mining. Mechanisation is by no means a new concept to the South African mining industry, as varying degrees of ...
Developing skills and capabilities that make a significant contribution to the successful implementation of mechanised mining.
What we do
The Centre for Mechanised Mining Systems supports Wits' purpose to be a research intensive university. Research, in the form of projects supported by the industry and carried out with the involvement of postgraduate students, is currently being undertaken by the Centre in areas where gaps exist in current knowledge relating to mechanisation.
A unique laboratory with comprehensive test facilities for material flow properties testing is being established under a formal collaboration agreement between Wits University and the University of Newcastle (NSW, Aus) and will be commissioned in 2012. Tunra Bulk Solids at the University of Newcastle Innovation Hub is a world leader in the technologies involved in storing, handling and conveying bulk solids.
The CMMS is committed to developing skills and capabilities that make a significant contribution to the successful implementation of mechanised and automated mining in southern Africa and the achievement of international recognition as a Centre for Mechanised Mining Systems.
The Centre, in conjunction with its associated academic Schools, runs three specialised Masters programmes focusing on critical systems in mechanised mining.
